May -The month of Alpinist

The month May is celebrated as a labour day wordwide. In nepal, this month has other importance as well. It is celebreted in a special way. Infact it is a big month for the mountaineering sector. Sometimes it is called the month of Alpinist. Allmost all the front pages of daily newspapers are covered with the news of setting and breaking records on Everest.

Everest has been submitted more than 2 thousand and 3 hundred times within 5 decades (since 29 may, 1953) from nepal side alone. The number of summiters who made it on the top are more than one thousand and five hundreds. More than 40 expedition teams were headed to the Everest base camp, this year. However, Everest was closed temporarily as a pressure from chinese government to allow the olympic Flame be taken to the top with out any interuption from Nepal side. inspite of tibetan protest and olympic game, numbers of new records are set and break. Congratulation to all, who made it to the top!

GLOBAL WARMING, IMJA TSHO AND KHUMBU VALLEY

Swelling Imja lake puts Khumbu region in peril

Imja Tsho, Khumbu

Imja, a fast-swelling glacial lake, is putting the entire Khumbu region in peril. The region,a popular destination for mountaineers from all over the world, will be swept awayif the lake bursts.Due to global warming, snow of the Himalayan region is melting faster and water is accumulating in southern valleys. Small piles of snow, hardly spotted in the 1960s, are melting and turning into big glacial lakes. Imja is one such lake. The Everest region is one of the hotspots of glacial melting in the Nepal Himalayas. Out of 20 potentially dangerous glacial lakes in Nepal, 12 lie in this region. A study conducted recently by the United Nations Environment Progamme (UNEP) and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) states that Imja is the fastest-retreating glacier in the entire Himalayas.Spotted as a group of small masses of snow in 1962, Imja has now turned into a one-square-kilometre lake.“Imja is expanding at an alarming rate. It is growing by 74 metres a year,” says Basanta Shrestha, division head of the IKM-MENTRIS section of the ICIMOD.“We ought to see how the lake is swelling and inform people about it,” he says.To keep an eye on fast-swelling Imja, the ICIMOD has installed a pair of video cameras by the lake. These cameras take pictures of the lake every 10 minutes. Lake’s rising level is recorded on a website through wireless internet and satellite.“After a year-long experiment, we have begun monitoring the lake through remote sensing. Now we can at least see what is happening there and make locals aware of any impending tragedy on time,” he says.“The formation of glacier lakes and many other changes in the region may or may not be due to global warming, but we need to have some scientific database to predict possible accidents,” Shrestha maintains.

Khumbu Climbing School

Khumbu Climbing SchoolBy Amendra Pokharel, Photographs by Sonam

Most climbers, including veterans from the West and other parts of the world, openly express their amazement at the naturally acquired skills of the Sherpas in climbing the mountains. Among the Sherpa climbers who die in the upper reaches of Himalayas, quite shockingly, 80 percent owe it to their scant knowledge and resources in climbing. Physical traits and physiological adaptability make the best climbers out of Sherpas, but the technical skills that elude them often result in fatal injuries. There is a school, fortunately, that takes this problem seriously and helps better equip the Sherpas in particular, and others interested in mountaineering, to the techniques of climbing. The school does its best to accommodate everyone registered for its two weeks training program, though its primary objective is to prepare Sherpas to become better climbers and therefore better guides, thereby reducing accidents and helping them earn a better living. The Khumbu Climbing School (KCS) was set up in the memory of the great American alpinist Alex Lowe by his wife Jennifer Lowe and best friend Conrad Anker in 2003. Alex Lowe died in an avalanche while climbing Shishapangma. He was caught in the avalanche along with Anker and a third member of the expedition, but Conrad somehow dug himself out and survived, and later joined hands with Lowe’s wife to establish the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation that runs the school. The annual training program takes place in the winter, starting from mid-January, at a climbing site located at 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) in the Khumbu village of Phortse. Depending upon the number, trainees are divided into groups of eight to ten. Three instructors (two foreign and one Nepali) are assigned to look after each group. For the initial five days the trainees are taught English language and a day or two of lessons on Extreme Altitude Medical Training. These trainings prepare the local Sherpas, who may have little or no knowledge of English, to communicate with the foreign instructors and rescuers when they face problems during the climbs. The medical training chiefly deals with bones, muscles and sicknesses resulting from altitude.

The Khumbu Climbing School is run with the support of mountaineering experts from the USA, Canada and other countries willing to volunteer. Donations from Outdoor Retailing Conventions in USA, which auctions mountaineering antiques twice a year, and from other interested organizations or individuals help fund the program. Two hotels close to the site of school’s makeshift camp have donated their land for a school office, which is to be built soon. On average the cost per candidate for the two weeks program is around NRs 18,000, which includes airfare, subsidized lodging, food and other expenses. The trainees are required to arrange for their own set of climbing equipment or rent it from the school’s store at Phortse for a small fee.The enrollment form for the climbing program is available for NRs 2,000 at Summit Trek Pvt. Ltd., Thamel, Kathmandu, each November/December. Contact Summit Trek by phone: 426.6217 or 426.0970.

On the first day, the Lamas at a local monastery perform traditional prayers seeking the success of the program and safety of the participants. The instructors, the trainees and local people take part in the prayer. Even the equipment and accessories to be used during the climbs are brought together and consecrated beforehand. The prayers are also held at the climbing sites. After the prayers are over the trainees, finally, get to put on climbing gear—boots, crampons, ropes, etc., and are let loose to rock, and sometimes roll! Instructors are always at hand, though, leading, supporting and protecting the pack of rookies. The two weeks of strenuous training ends with a grand celebration in the tradition of the Sherpas of Phortse. The foreigners get to live through an all new experience as they taste Sherpa food, dress up Sherpa style and dance to Sherpa music. Phortse community members are highly supportive of the KCS’ activities and join in the celebration. After the training program is over each of the trainees receives a certificate of participation. Among those who have participated in the KCS program three times, the two best ones are awarded a scholarship to join National Outdoor Leadership program held in the United States.

TIBET PROTEST, BUDDHISM and IT"S Side effect

The Tibetan exile who have been protesting in the street of kathmandu since march 10 against the crackdown of Tibetans in the capital city of Tibet, lhasa continuously protesting in different places. Since then we have witnessed the inhumane and brutality action of Nepalese Police Personnel’s dealing with exile protestors. Everyday hundreds of Tibetan including nuns and monks are beaten up and detained them for unnecessary reasons. Now the situation is even more confused and critical. The police personnel so called loktantri prahari started torturing the people on the street, who resemble Tibetan and the victims are sherpas. Yesterday I was on the way to new road, I saw some polices and women were arguing and after sometimes the police asked them to return back to their home. Later I came to know that the police personnel mistook those sherpa women as Tibetans. This incident shows that, it’s not only the issue of Tibet’s freedom, human rights but also the issue of religion. After the Jana Andolan II, Nepal has been declared as Secular state. Does it make any sense that security forces still treat people as per their religion? We sherpas are Buddhist, we follow our tradition. We see Dalai Lama as Spiritual Guru, So what’s wrong with chanting OM MANE PAME HUH or Long Live Dalai Lama.??

Recently, I’ve heard the rumor that Nepal Government has given permit to the climbers of Mt Everest setting various condition like, the climbers are restricted to climb above south Cole from may 1st to 10th but why? Don’t you think the issue of human right is much more important than Olympic and it’s torch? Ok that’s fine, but I have heard that the climbers are not allowed to take any photographs (kupar) of Dalai Lama and other stuffs like sungdi, chhelap with them? Do you think it’s fair? If it’s true, I think the community should raise a voice against such discrimination. Nobody has right to discriminate our religion and guru. So, I’d like to request all community group of khumbu, especially Himalayan club (lukla), Namche youth group (namche) and khumjung youth club (khumjung) to raise a voice against such social, religious and political issues in khumbu!

We together can change the world, if not at least khumbu!

A blessing In Disguise

A Blessing in Disguise:

During the deadly assault on 9/11...The head of a company survived 9/11 because his son started kindergarten.Another man was alive because it was his turn to bring donuts. One woman was late because her alarm clock didn’t go off on time.Another was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike becauseof an auto accident and his life was spared. One missed his bus.One spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to change. One’s car wouldn’t start. One went back to answer the telephone. One had a child that dawdled and didn’t get ready as soon as he should have. One couldn’t get a taxi. One that really struck me was the man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning. Before he got to the Towers he developed a blister on his foot. He stopped at a drugstoreto buy a Band-Aid. That’s why he is alive today.

Now when I am stuck in traffic, miss an elevator, turn back to answer a ringing telephone... all the little things that annoy me I think to myself, this is exactly where God wants me to be at this very moment.Next time your morning seems to be going wrong, the children are slow getting dressed, you can’t seem to find the car keys, you hit every traffic light, do not get mad orfrustrated. God may be at work watching over you. — Author Unknown

Encorachment in Sagarmatha National Park

Kathmandu, February 26:
The Sagarmatha National Park, a UN Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) world heritage site, which also houses the Mt Everest, is now ruined by encroachment for haphazard commercialisation. Two resorts — Kong Dey View Resort and Farak-pa Village Resort that are being constructed in the national park area — were constructed in controversial circumstances. The locals claim that the hotels are built on encroahed public land and are damaging the cultural and national landscape of the world heritage site.“We are more than shocked to know that two grand hotels are being constructed in core area of Sagarmatha National Park. This is going to damage the nature and value of the national park,” said Sonam Gyalzen Sherpa, chairman of the Buffer Zone Management Committee of the park.He said the locals had been very conscious about the conservation issues for thousands of years but since the people from other areas have migrated to the sacred village for commercial purposes, the tradition to conserve nature has been destroyed.According to the officials at Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, the Environment Impact Assessment for both the projects were passed in November and December, 2004, when Bachaspati Devkota was the environment minister. On the other hand, assistant management officer at Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation, Surya Bahadur Pandey admitted that it was the result of the government’s mismanagement. He said the two resorts came up at Sagarmatha as a result of government’s mismanagement and the local people’s tendency to encroach upon public land.“It would not have been like that had the local people been aware of the public land and its significance,” he said.He added that many other big hotels there have violated the norms.A UNESCO official said the UNESCO had also tried to raise the issue and had asked the DNPWC several times about the authenticity of the hotel but the government officials were found skeptical on this issue.

http://www.alexlowe.org/

The 5th annual Khumbu Climbing School Program, Phortse Nepal.

As in the past few years, the team expects to find spectacular ice for instruction for over 60 lucky students.

The Khumbu Climbing School (KCS) is an annual vocational training and instructional program for Nepali climbers and is designed to increase the competency of Nepali people who climb and work in the high mountains. The school takes places in January, the low season for altitude workers, and classes are held in the village of Phortse, a one day walk from Namche Bazaar, the "capital" of the Khumbu. Training is conducted on frozen waterfalls on the northern flank of Khumbila Peak. The program is endorsed by the Nepal Mountaineering Association and is taught by volunteers and funded by the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation (http://www.alexlowe.org/.)

2135 Earth Mouse Year Losar

Wish You all very Happy Losar 2135 Earth Mouse Year.

This new year bring peace, prosperity happiness and healthiness in your households. May Guru Rinpoche Bless you.

About Losar:

Generally losar falls in the month of february. This year the sherpa/tibetan new year falls on friday february 8. The word losar is a tibetan word for New year. Here Lo means "Year" and sar means "New". There is no exact no of days that losar is celebrated. However losar has important days on the frist three days.

Sherpa people follow the tibetan calender, which is made up of twelve lunar months and losar begins on the frist day of the frist month. The year 2008 is tibetan year 2134 Earth Rat Year. The day before losar eve, is celebrated in a different way.

Prepration begins well before the arrival of the new year. it's called "Ghutuk Day". That particular day sherpa's and tibetan prepare special meal called Ghutuk, which is a sherpa stew and consists nine different ingredients including barely and vegetables. People enjoy eating ghutuk. There is an old saying: "Ghutuk thu ni shina shi, Dhena dhe!" (we'll have gutuk at any cost). Another intresting thing is that they prepare special bread called Khapse (flour, ghee, sugar prepration) for losar.

"Ngishu gu ki lula jyo mein,

shya metu ghutuk thu ni chhyo mein!"

Happy Gutuk.

Passport "Working for Living Planet"

How you can help the environment in your daily life

Global Warming!

How you can help the environment in your daily life

At home, shopping or in the garden - you can make a difference.
Even the simplest everyday activities can make a real difference to the environment. So follow these simple tips and take action for our living planet.

In your home

-Turn off equipment like televisions and stereos when you're not using them. That little red standby light means they're still using power - and that means a contribution to global warming.
Save water:
- turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.
- collect the water used to wash vegetables and salad to water your houseplants.
Call your local government to see if they have a disposal location for used car batteries and other hazardous household wastes.
Recycle your paper, glass, plastics and other waste. Call your local government to find out if they offer a collection service.
Use rechargeable batteries.
Send e-greetings instead of paper cards. Check out the range of free WWF e-cards available.
Help reduce the world's rubbish dumps - don't use "throw-away" products like paper plates and napkins, and plastic knives, forks, and cups.

Sherpa Clan [ sherwi ru]

SHERPA TRADITION(sherpa Clans)

Ru is a Sherpa word meaning bones. The male line tramsmits the ru (bones) and so the father’s lineage determines one’s clan membership. Four main clans originally came from Kham, in eastern Tibet, to Solu-Khumbu:the Thimi, Thakthowa, Chawa, and Lama. Each clan gave rise to several brother-clans and comtinuous migration has brought many new clans in to the area.
Most of the Sherpa clans came to Khumbu over the Nangpa La (pass). in to the area.

Most of the Sherpa clans came to Khumbu over the Nangpa La (pass).
Only the first arrivals, the Thimi, came via Rongshar and Rolwaling.
The Paldorjie clan gave rise to the Salakha, Dhag Shingto, Kambache and Goparma. A clan called Michen-topa in Kham, but Thakthowa here gave rise to the Gole, GArtsa, Pinasa, Pankarma, Sharpa penagpa and Shari-topa brother clans. From the Lama clan came the Serwa and Gombawa brother clans. The chawa remained a single clan that originated from a lama and his family that came from Tibet about 360 years ago.
Other clans that came to Khumbu more recently are Chu-sharwa, Murmin, Lhukpa, Nawa, Shangku, Zongnagpa, and Mendawa.Since then, many people have continued coming from Tibet and other parts of Nepal. Newarts, Chetris, Tamangs, and blackmiths (Kamis) have moved up from the lower valleys of Nepal. Though these people are from different areas and religions, they often pray to the Buddha while here in Khumbu.

Each clan gases its own deity and ways of doing pujahs. Sherpa custom does not allow marriage between members of the same clan or brother clans.Upper Khumbu People usually pray to gonpo Maning, a deity who is sometimes male at other times female. Solu people worship Gonpo chagshipa, who has four arms. Different clans pray to other deities. paldorjie prays to Bhari Lhatsen Newa to Tawache, chu sharwa to Lobuche, Sherwa to Arkamche, Thakthowa to Lung kyung Bhari, Mendawa to Zhamte Chen. There are also special deities worshipped by the clans do pujabs.
